Healthy Halloween treats and crafts
We love Halloween as much as the next family but with childhood obesity on the raise and talk of tooth brushing lessons entering the school curriculum, I wanted to make sure Jacks Halloween was not just a sugar-fest.
As he is only two years old Jack is too young to go trick or treating, but that doesn’t mean he has to miss out on the fun.
We have spent the last few days creating our own toddler friendly Halloween.
We made paper pumpkin lanterns using chalk to colour in circles of sugar paper which we then stuck googly eyes and a sugar paper nose and mouth onto, the glue sticks better if you brush off as much of the chalk residue as possible.
Other craft ideas you could try are hand prints which you could decorate as ghosts or monsters, make your own witches hat and spooky paper chains.
We love an afternoon or evening spent snuggled up on the sofa watching spooky movies but Jack and I did some moving and grooving first to a Halloween hits album. Jack loves dancing and we made an afternoon of it pretending to be a werewolf to “clap for the wolfman” or doing the timewarp.
For a devious dinner we are having a go at these fabulous mummy sausages by organix food, which will go brilliantly with a serving of frogs brains (peas) and a dash of blood (ketchup).
How about trying this tasty teeth? They are easy and quick to make, just spread peanut butter on one side of some slices of apple, pop a few mini marshmallows in between the slices and voila!
Or these ghostly bananas? Freeze your bananas over night then chop in half, spread a little yogurt over the banana and roll in desiccated coconut. Dont forget a raisin for the mouth and chocolate chips for the eyes, a lolly stick works brilliantly for keeping little fingers free from mess.
